Ashton Memorial 3/7

Posted by
Jules (Drayton, United Kingdom) on 23 September 2013 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Lancaster's Ashton Memorial is a Grade I listed building and was commissioned by Baron Ashton (a British businessman and Liberal Party politician) as a memorial to his late wife. Designed in the Edwardian Baroque style by John Belcher and completed in 1909 it has been described as "England's grandest folly". Built with stone from Portland (Dorset) and around 150 feet tall it dominates the Lancaster skyline. The first floor outdoor viewing gallery provides superb views of the surrounding countryside and across Morecambe Bay.
