Lake Matheson 2/2

Posted by
Jules (Drayton, United Kingdom) on 22 August 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Lake Matheson was formed by glaciation 14,000 years ago and is famous for its reflected views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman (though sadly not on this occasion).

The lake is situated on the valley floor about 12 km from the current Fox Glacier.

A traditional mahinga kai (food gathering place) for Māori people, the lake contains long finned eel as well as being home to many water birds.
