Sunset on Didcot Power Station 2/4

Posted by
Jules (Drayton, United Kingdom) on 30 July 2012 in Business & Industry and Portfolio.

Didcot Power Station is technically two power stations side by side - Didcot A (combined coal and oil) and Didcot B (natural gas) that supply the National Grid. The combined power stations feature a chimney (200m) and six hyperbolic cooling towers (each 99m), which can be seen from much of the surrounding landscape.

Although Didcot A won architectural awards following its construction, Didcot Power Station was voted Britain's third worst eyesore in 2003 by Country Life readers. Radio Oxford also received votes for the station when they conducted a survey of the worst building in Oxfordshire, with some listeners referring to it as looking like somewhere up north.

Didcot A is scheduled for decommissioning in 2015 and Npower plans to sell off the land so that 100's of new homes can be built on the site.
