Allan Ramsay was a wigmaker to trade who wrote essays and poetry. His talents as a writer lead to fame and fortune. A man of vision he created the very first borrowing library and made books and plays available to the poor residents of the Royal Mile. He also built a house at the top of the Edinburghs' Royal Mile around 1740 which was nicknamed 'Goose Pie House' because it had eight sides.
